The 9/11 Coloring Book

Image
The 9/11 coloring book Discussing 9/11, and trying to explain the larger, complicated and sloppy context of this horrific event – with children – is not an easy task. The images from that day are scary, the notion that we have enemies actively engaged in harming us where we live and work is scary, the sense that something very bad could happen in a flash, is scary. We are constantly bombarded with news that portrays graphic, violent events. If it bleeds, it leads. Turn on the TV and it might seem that in every quarter, there is rioting and war, crazy shootings and countries on the brink of collapse. To the extent children are exposed to television news, they can’t help but notice. Whether we like it or not, terrorism is a reality and it is here to stay. We may disagree on how to fight it, on how to budget our resources, or on the extent or nature of the threat, but the majority agrees that terrorists are out there trying and succeeding to hit targets. Insofar as 9/11 was an

Are Modern Cars Vulnerable to Computer Viruses?

Image
Sounds Like the answer is YES. Computer scientists from the University of California and the University of Washington recently proved they could hack into cars and even cause them to crash: "They figured out how to attack vehicles by putting viruses onto compact discs. When unknowing victims try to listen to the CD, it infects the car radio, then makes its way across the network to more critical systems. For instance, they came up with a combination attack dubbed "Self Destruct". It starts when a 60-second timer pops up on a car's digital dashboard and starts counting down. When it reaches zero the virus can simultaneously shut off the car's lights, lock its doors, kill the engine and release or slam on the brakes."

A Husband and his wife agreed that anytime they want to make love, they will call it a ‘PHONE CALL’ so that the kids will not decode. One day, the husband sent his son to tell his mother that, "Daddy wants to make a phone call. Mother replies: Tell your Dad that the Network is down today. AUSTRALIA Stop Great Barrier Coal

Image
Australia could let mining magnates  build one of the world's largest coal ports  on top  of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem  -- opening access to 8 billion extra tonnes of planet-killing coal and risking the survival of this entire amazing world heritage site.   Activists in Australia are pressuring the government and UNESCO is speaking out, but a bank owned by the US public is key to the project.  Global pressure on the US bank now could bring international shame  and spotlight environmental issues in the middle of the US election season. If they pull out, the entire crazy plan could be shut down for good.  Let’s up the pressure on the bank’s chairman Fred Hochberg and  demand he halt funding for Great Barrier Coal . We have only days to act -- he's in Australia for meetings right now.  Click below to join the call to save the reef and Avaaz will deliver our voices to Hochberg:   http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_ great_barrier_coal_mine_ global/?bwYCcab&v=17170

No property in Istanbul (KONSTANTINOUPOLIS) or Izmir (SMYRNI) for Greeks

Image
Summer houses in Alaçatı (ALAKATI), a popular destination in the Aegean province of İzmir (SMYRNI), are seen in this file photo. İzmir is among provinces banned for Greek citizens for land purchases.  Hürriyet photo   Turkey expects a great foreign interest in its estate market thanks to a new code.  Still, neighboring countries may have lower chances due to a bunch of restrictions  Citizens of Syria, Armenia and North Korea are not allowed to acquire any real property, including residential or business property or land, in Turkey, under a recently announced reciprocity regulation, which also prohibits Greek citizens from buying estate on coastal provinces including Istanbul. The code allows the citizens of 183 other countries to purchase Turkish real estate.  The government has sent a letter to all ambassadors to Turkey asking them to promote the new law, in order to accelerate property sales, daily Hürriyet reported Aug. 10. Sources say the government will ask the privat

Ghost town FAMAGUSTA may hold the key to Cyprus reunification talks

Image
Once a Mediterranean playground for Hollywood stars, Varosha is now a no-go zone between Turkish and Greek communities   Famagusta-Varosha in Cyprus once drew Hollywood stars such as Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor to its beaches. There were more than 100 hotels, 5,000 houses and businesses, museums, churches and schools here, but today they stand rotting and empty behind barbed wire. They have been deserted and fenced off since a July 1974 war that split the island and made Varosha, part of the ancient port town of Famagusta, a no-go zone. Mindful of UN resolutions barring resettlement, Turkey fenced off the 2.3 square mile area of Varosha and abandoned it. But, recently, and with Cyprus this month taking on the EU's six-month rotating presidency, both sides have mooted reopening Varosha and its white-sand beaches, to help break a deadlock in UN-backed reunification talks.

Wealthy tourists from the Persian Gulf are paying to marry under-age Egyptian girls just for the summer, according to a report. These temporary marriages are not legally binding and end when the men return to their homes in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. The tourists pay a 'dowry' to poor families through intermediaries with prices ranging from £320 to £3,200. The young victims - some under 18 - suffer sexual slavery and are forced to be servants to their 'husbands', claims the U.S. State Department report 'Trafficking in Persons'.

11 tips for social networking safety

Image
1 Use caution when you click links  that you receive in messages from your friends on your social website. Treat links in messages on these sites as you would links in email messages. (For more information, see  Approach links in email with caution  and  Click Fraud: Cybercriminals want you to 'like' it .) 2 Know what you've posted about yourself.  A common way that hackers break into financial or other accounts is by clicking the "Forgot your password?" link on the account login page. To break into your account, they search for the answers to your security questions, such as your birthday, home town, high school class, or mother's middle name. If the site allows, make up your own password questions, and don't draw them from material anyone could find with a quick search. For more information, see:
