The 9/11 coloring book
Discussing 9/11, and trying to explain the larger, complicated and sloppy context of this horrific event – with children – is not an easy task. The images from that day are scary, the notion that we have enemies actively engaged in harming us where we live and work is scary, the sense that something very bad could happen in a flash, is scary.

We are constantly bombarded with news that portrays graphic, violent events. If it bleeds, it leads. Turn on the TV and it might seem that in every quarter, there is rioting and war, crazy shootings and countries on the brink of collapse. To the extent children are exposed to television news, they can’t help but notice.
Whether we like it or not, terrorism is a reality and it is here to stay. We may disagree on how to fight it, on how to budget our resources, or on the extent or nature of the threat, but the majority agrees that terrorists are out there trying and succeeding to hit targets. Insofar as 9/11 was an undeniably pivotal event in U.S. and global history, its being part of curriculum is surely justified.
