Τhe Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot negotiators continued their contacts in South Africa yesterday with a meeting on Monday, in Cape Town, with former President of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize winner, FW De Klerk.

According to a message by Greek Cypriot negotiator, Andreas Mavroyiannis, on his twitter, De Klerk gave “a moving account on crucial moments where one has to live up to historic responsibility for the future of the country.”

The negotiators also met this morning with the national intelligence chief, Moe Shaik, on the role of intelligence and integration of agencies in South Africa.

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot negotiators, Andreas Mavroyiannis and Kudret Özersay, respectively, described their trip to South Africa as very useful, acknowledging at the same time that "all international conflicts are unique and there is no specific similarity between South African and Cyprus processes."

In a joint statement on their visit to South Africa, issued on Tuesday, the two negotiators thanked their hosts for giving them the opportunity "to get familiarized with the South African peace and reconciliation process, especially on lessons learned on how to avoid deadlocks or breakdowns."

"Although we acknowledge that all international conflicts are unique and there is no specific similarity between South African and Cyprus processes, we regard the sharing of experience useful," they noted.
