Michael Phelps is the greatest "Olympian" but in Swimming
Who has been the greatest Olympic athlete since ancient Olympia's multi-sports festival was revived in Athens 116 years ago?
The debate was reopened on Tuesday when Michael Phelps anchored the US men's quartet to a sweeping victory in the 4x200 metres freestyle relay at the London Games.
Rodion Phelps is simply the greatest in swimming. That is a fact! However there is no such thing as the greatest Olympian. You can't win as many medals anywhere else and quantity must not be the factor here. Sports are versatile and incomparable and let each of them have own Greats!
Chris C How can anyone be described as 'Olympics Greatest Athlete' in only ONE SPORT ? He may well be the greats 'SWIMMER' ever but that can also depend on the opposition at the time.
Nevertheless - yes he is 'ONE' of the Greatest !
MICHAEL PHELPS

E Chris Canterbury Kent Michael Phelps is definately the most decorated Olympian but the Greatest Olympian ever I would think could be another matter and should go to someone like Daley Thomson for the number of different specialist events involved as partaking in one or two can be hard but 10 that is something else!, Then at the same time you could say that Carl Lewis or Jesse Owens deserves the title as they to were truly great athletes. I think the fairest way to decide this tricky question is indeed to have The best Olympian in their field of sporting activity as we have and will have no doubt in the future more Athletes that are worthy of this title. Chris Canterbury Kent.
